| Nassau County Humane Society Pre-Adoption Sterilization Program Shelter operated by humane society contracting with county and city governments Shelter Intake FY 2003: 4,451 Pets Adopted FY 2003: 1,228 Situation Statement: Before the current policy was put into place pets were adopted with a certificate for a discount on surgery at a local clinic. Monitoring of the program proved that less that 40% of pets being adopted were ever altered. The current director, Sparky Weitzel, knew something had to change. Several ideas were presented to local Veterinarians before a program was worked out that was acceptable to all. Solution: Local Veterinarians agreed to perform discounted surgeries on pets that were to be placed into the adoption area in the shelter. Surgery costs would be covered by increasing adoption fees. As there are six Veterinarians in the county, pets are sent to clinics on a rotating basis, depending upon capacity. Pets that are to be placed into the adoption area are first screened for any health or behavior concerns. If the animal is considered adoptable he/she is then scheduled to be sent to a participating clinic for surgery. Pets are transported to and from clinics either by animal control officers or volunteers.
Budget: At the time pre-adoption sterilization was instituted adoption fees were increased from $10 to the current $75. This covers the cost of sterilization and a little extra to create a fund to pay for sterilizations on pets that do not get adopted. >> Next: Clay County Animal Control Pre-Adoption Sterilization Program |
